The Italian Connection (1972)

"What are you doing in an Italian nightclub anyway? Too old to use as cannon fodder in Vietnam?"

Directed by: Fernando Di Leo
Cinematography by: Franco Villa
Genre: Crime/Thriller

Plot:
Two American hitmen are sent to Milan to kill a street-level pimp set up as a patsy for a missing heroin shipment.

Reasons to watch:
Many of Fernando Di Leo's poliziotteschi crime thrillers feature characters who've been pushed to the point of no return. Having nothing to lose, they erupt in violent supernovas and obliterate everything in their path - including themselves. In The Italian Connection, Mario Adorf's savage physicality creates one of Di Leo's most volatile eruptions as the pimp, Luca Canali, where Adorf transforms from an aloof lecher into a relentless, animalistic inferno powered by nothing but all-consuming wrath. No happy endings in these Italian neo-noirs, just vengeance served colder than the Ninth Circle of Hell.
