Casablanca (1942)

"It seems that destiny has taken a hand."

Directed by: Michael Curtiz
Cinematography by: Arthur Edeson
Country: United States
Genre: Drama/Romance/War

Plot:
It's WWII. Man meets woman. Man and woman fall for each other hard. Man asks woman to flee France with him. Woman is like, "I love you, but no." Man becomes amoral abyss of misery and moves to Casablanca, where he opens a bar that's as seedy as it is ritzy, existing in a permanent state of neutrality about everything and everyone. Until woman shows up at bar with escaped POW beau. Man gets wrecked and drunkenly utters, "Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world... she walks into mine..." and the audience is like, "damn, that hits."

Reasons to watch:
Exquisite style. Magical lighting. Romantic framing. Dazzling camerawork. Sensational deep-space photography. Legendary dialogue. Heartfelt performances. Thrilling story. Iconic score. Not perfect - like most old Hollywood films it pulls its punches, dulls its edges, and leaves a sour taste when it comes to characters of color - but a 100% certified classic nonetheless.

Where to watch:
