The Stepford Wives (1975)

"Why? Because we can."
Directed by: Bryan Forbes
Cinematography by: Owen Roizman
Country: United States
Plot:
Based on the novel by Ira Levin, a photographer and her family move to a picturesque neighborhood, but she quickly becomes suspicious that something is not quite right with the town's pristine, docile residents.
Reasons to watch:
Though it's not exactly "SCARY," and its shock factor has been watered down through the past 3.5 decades of pop culture and parody, The Stepford Wives radiates an eerie low-level dread for much of its runtime that builds to a climax of piercing existential terror. It's easy to forget how well-written, methodically paced, and full-of-depth genre films were during the horror renaissance of the '60s and '70s before its commercialization in the '80s (not to say there aren't some elite horror screenplays from the '80s), and this adaptation is no exception, ripe with themes of forced domesticity, patriarchy, and female agency.
