Swamp Water (1941)

"It's like being dead all these years. Now you're telling me to come back to life again"
Directed by: Jean Renoir & Irving Pichel (uncredited)
Cinematography by: J. Peverell Marley & Lucien Ballard (uncredited)
Country: U.S.
Plot:
A trapper searching for his lost dog strikes up a friendship with a fugitive hiding deep in Georgia's Okefenokee Swamp. After the two form a business partnership, the trapper falls for the fugitive's ragamuffin daughter and attempts to clear the false charges against the wanted man in this adaptation of Vereen Bell's 1940 novel of the same name.
Reasons to watch:
Renoir's first film in the U.S. after leaving France feels much more classic Hollywood than Renoir - possibly because it's one of his few films where he wasn't involved in the writing process - but a tense climax involving quicksand, solid performances from screen veterans Walter Brennan and Walter Huston, and alluring location photography make up for the lack of bite in this simple and straightlaced tale.
