Shoot First, Die Later (1974)

"Sergeant, I'm from the South. You take away our superstitions and we got nothing. Except cholera"

Directed by: Fernando Di Leo
Cinematography by: Franco Villa
Country: Italy/France
Genre: Crime/Thriller

Plot:
A corrupt lieutenant has to find a way to keep his mafia connections secret and his family safe when his desk-jockey father, a lower-ranking police officer, stumbles onto the trail of a mob hit.

Reasons to watch:
Another cynical, hard-hitting neo-noir poliziottesco (that's the first time I've been able to spell it correctly without looking it up!) from Di Leo that delivers another darkly fascinating character study with a surprisingly engaging story and superb dramatic tension. It's rare to get this much substance in an exploitation film, even if it is amoral and pulpy. And the camerawork and editing in the car chase and action sequences reach an even higher caliber than what he and his crew achieved in the Milieu Trilogy.
