The Gospel According to St. Matthew (1964)

"For men abiding in a land where death overshadowed them, light has dawned."

Directed by: Pier Paolo Pasolini
Cinematography by: Tonino Delli Colli
Country: Italy/France

Plot:
A retelling of the story of Jesus Christ by the openly gay atheist Marxist iconoclast Pier Paolo Pasolini.

Reasons to watch:
You might expect something more incendiary from that description, but Pasolini’s version is highly accurate to the New Testament (with most dialogue taken straight from the text) and deeply sincere - a thoughtful social humanist meditation that skillfully balances visual grandeur with neorealist modesty.

Where to watch:
The Criterion Channel/Tubi/Fandor
