The Killers (1946)

"There's no use hanging around here. I never did like wakes."

Directed by: Robert Siodmak
Cinematography by: Elwood Bredell
Country: United States

Plot:
A broken-down boxer falls for a pretty dame, gets swept up in a heist, and ends up on the wrong side of multiple guns in this adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s short story.

Reasons to watch:
Unsurprisingly, given its source material, The Killers is fantastically written. And to do the story justice, Siodmak was clearly given a beefy budget compared to most noirs because it’s a technical masterpiece full of stunning chiaroscuro compositions worthy of an art museum, thrillingly fluid camerawork, and dynamic editing that supercharges this menacing underworld of death and deceit with crackling electricity. A must-watch.
