April 2023 Favorite Watches & Supercut Recap

That month I watched a bunch of Siodmak, was wowed by two deeply fucked up contemporary slashers, and spent my 4/20 wigged out on Willy Wonka.

April Recap:

[Editor's note: I didn't write a recap blurb for this]

Supercut song credit goes to George FitzGerald for his track “Burns,” from the 2018 album All That Must Be.

Top Ten Favorite Watches of the Month:

Supremely well-rounded sci-fi action spectacle.

An underseen, fatalistic Renoir flick with early traces of neorealism and film noir.

Stunning and sickening by turns, a deeply poignant, incredibly photographed experimental short doc about a polluted river in India.

All my homies hate Room 402.

They really knew how to make some fucked up children’s films back in the day.

Pure, unadulterated exploitation schlock with makeup effects that push the line of realism past what I thought was even possible and adds star-making genre performances from Lauren LaVera and David Howard Thornton.

Another short doc with unbelievable imagery that’s about humans ruining everything, even the deep sea which seems like it exists on another planet in a far away solar system.

Mizoguchi’s scathing indictment about misogyny and the dehumanization of geishas still scorches nearly 90 years later.

This darkly funny and subversive slasher offers some of the best zeitgeist-fueled character work in contemporary genre storytelling.

A masterfully crafted film noir in every respect.
