Toni (1935)
Directed by: Jean Renoir
Cinematography by: Claude Renoir
Country: France
Plot:
A tangled web of affairs at an immigrant camp in southern France leads to death.
Reasons to watch:
As with Renoir’s best, Toni is a cynical proto-noir - and in this case, a proto-neorealist flick as well - populated with brutes, fools, and cowards, where flawed characters meet fatalistic ends.
Where to watch:
The Criterion Channel
