The Lower Depths (1936)

"Isn't it absurd?"

Directed by: Jean Renoir
Cinematography by: Fédote BourgasoffJean Bachelet (uncredited)
Country: France

Plot:
A petty thief tries to make a clean break in this adaptation of Maxim Gorky’s 1902 play, a swirl of class conflict and romance.

Reasons to watch:
A skilled director, Renoir’s writing and exceptional storytelling ability were always his biggest assets (though unfortunately rarely without a bit of casual, light sexism). In The Lower Depths, he turns his sights on promoting collectivism and class consciousness with characters cloaked in active nihilism, finding reason, being, and love in the absurd.

Where to watch:
The Criterion Channel
