You Only Live Once (1937)

"I guess they see something in each other that no one else can see."
Directed by: Fritz Lang
Cinematography by: Leon Shamroy
Country: United States
Plot:
A three-time ex-con finally finds domestic bliss with his new wife only to be sucked back in when he’s framed for a botched bank job and murder, eventually turning to desperate measures to escape the electric chair.
Reasons to watch:
In one of his earliest film roles, Hollywood giant Henry Fonda delivered a powerhouse performance as the deeply unlucky lead, while Fritz Lang turned the focus of his ire from mob mentality (in his previous movie, Fury) to punishment-obsessed justice systems in this suspenseful proto-noir. Dreamy-eyed sweetheart Sylvia Sidney also has to be one of film history’s most unexpected ride-or-die bitches.
