Evil Dead (2013)

Plot:

Supported by her friends and brother, a young woman tries to kick her drug addiction cold turkey at a secluded cabin in the woods, but when an ancient tome is discovered in the basement, things get really evil and dead.

Reasons to watch:

Jane Levy carries the everliving undead hell out of this grim and largely humorless remake, and she has the demonic giggles down pat. Strong visuals, effects, and tension also help to make up for the lackluster writing. For some reason, Álvarez shoots a lot of it like a 2000s alt-metal music video but that’s more of a curious observation than a judgment. A much more commendable effort than most genre reboots.
