The French Dispatch (2021)

“Perhaps the doubtful old maxim speaks true. All grand beauties withhold their deepest secrets.”

Directed by: Wes Anderson
Cinematography by: Robert D. Yeoman
Country: Germany/United States
Genre: Comedy/Drama

Plot:
An anthology of tales told from the perspectives of three American journalists in France during the mid-twentieth century.

Reasons to watch:
It’s a film lover’s film through and through, with nonstop visual homages to New Wave and arthouse titans ranging from Godard to Bergman to Tarkovsky. Pure eye candy and an elite exercise in form, retaining Wes Anderson’s infectious playfulness and comedy despite all of its light experimentation. Really cool to see Wes translate and reinterpret New Wave cinema through the lens of his own incredibly unique artistry.

Where to watch:
HBO Max / Hulu
