There Was a Father (1942)

"I don't want to be responsible for other people's children anymore. It's too frightening."

Directed by: Yasujirô Ozu
Cinematography by: Yûharu Atsuta
Country: Japan
Genre: Drama

Plot:
A single father makes sacrifices for his son's education.

Reasons to watch:
Perhaps a bit forgettable within Ozu's oeuvre, but every movie he makes is a mini film class. It's a testament to his structure and pacing that his films can be so low-key and never feel overlong or make me restless as a viewer - just immersion into the patient, steady flow of time.

Where to watch:
The Criterion Channel
