Day of Wrath (1943)
Directed by: Carl Theodor Dreyer
Cinematography by: Karl Andersson
Country: Denmark
Plot:
A young wife has an affair with her elderly husband's son and gets accused of witchcraft after tragedy strikes the family.
Reasons to watch:
Day of Wrath is considered one of the best films of Danish master Carl Theodor Dreyer. His atmospheric slow-cinema set the bar for future arthouse films, and the silences in this quietly nightmarish social commentary on the horrors of female sexual repression and persecution under religious fundamentalism blare louder than the seven horns of the apocalypse.
