A Day in the Country (1936)

"I often come here. My happiest memories are here."

Directed by: Jean Renoir
Cinematography by: Claud Renoir
Country: France

Plot:
Two rural restaurant workers woo the mother and daughter of a passing Parisian family in this short feature Renoir was unable to complete. Based on the story "Une partie de campagne" by Guy de Maupassant.

Reasons to watch:
There's a palpable freedom and playfulness radiating from the film as Renoir took full advantage of shooting in the open environment of a scenic countryside far removed from the interior confines of his many Paris-based films. It by no means has a "happy" ending, but A Day in the Country is undeniably one of the most serene and easy-going works of Renoir's often razor-toothed filmography.

Where to watch:
The Criterion Channel/Max
