From Hell (2001)
"I have no peers present here. No man amongst you is fit to judge the mighty art that I have wrought."
Directed by: Albert & Allen Hughes
Cinematography by: Peter Deming
Country: United States/United Kingdom/Czech Republic
Plot:
Adapted from the graphic novel by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell - loosely based on the real killings by Jack the Ripper - in which an ambiguously clairvoyant, opium-addicted detective stumbles upon conspiracies and secret societies while investigating a rash of grisly murders.
Reasons to watch:
[Character reveal SPOILERS below]
As far as studio horror films go, From Hell does not get the credit it deserves. The underappreciated Hughes Brothers make great use of their mid-tier budget in crafting this atmospheric period horror flick - with a sharp social edge and occasionally gruesome effects - that's unafraid to get weird with it. Ian Holm also does not receive nearly enough recognition as a character actor - this man really played Jack the Ripper, Bilbo Baggins, and a Napolean Bonaparte imposter all in the same year. How does that not get discussed more often?
