Jubilee (1978)

"Consider the world's diversity... and worship it. By denying its multiplicity... you deny your own true nature. Equality prevails not for god's sake... but for man's. Men are weak... and cannot endure their manifold nature."
Directed by: Derek Jarman
Cinematography by: Peter Middleton
Country: United Kingdom
Plot:
An angel sends Queen Elizabeth I four centuries into the dystopian future where roving gangs of punks rule the streets.
Reasons to watch:
Jubilee doesn't punch above its weight class, but it offers some pensive critiques of the late 70s punk movement in the United Kingdom with its anarchic low-budget artistry. It's hard to quite call it dystopian when it so accurately predicts individualist ideology in the West during the 80s, but with plenty of poetic discourse and surreal imagery, it takes aim at the empty posturing of much of the punk movement that would greedily submit to commercialism and fascist politics in exchange for profit.
