Where the Wild Things Are (2009)

"Then I have a double re-cracker, which can get through anything in this universe. And that's the end, and there's nothing more powerful after that, ever. Period."
Directed by: Spike Jonze
Cinematography by: Lance Acord
Country: Germany/United States/Australia
Plot:
A lonely, frustrated, and imaginative young boy finds himself in a land of fun-loving monsters after running away from home. Adapted from the 1963 children's picture book by Maurice Sendak.
Reasons to watch:
The story's wholesomeness and heartfelt sentimentality mostly make up for the emotionally challenging plot turns - for a family film - and unsettling creature designs that exist in the same uncanny valley as the Circus Pizza animatronics (as if they were released into the wild and evolved more humanoid features and movements). The love with which the cast and crew crafted this adaptation is very apparent though, and the carefree silliness and devoted central performance from the film's young star is difficult not to get swept up in. Not an essential watch, but worth checking out for anyone looking for a far-left-field family movie.
