Bottoms (2023)

"I'm not your gay Yoda, Josie."

Directed by: Emma Seligman
Cinematography by: Maria Rusche
Country: United States
Genre: Comedy

Plot:
Unpopular high school friends PJ and Josie start an all-female fight club in the guise of self-defense to seduce the hot cheerleaders they want to lose their virginities to, but the lies they tell to attract members soon get away from them.

Reasons to watch:
Emma Seligman's campy, queer comedy, Bottoms, is a fun throwback to the foul-mouthed teen comedies of decades past that satirizes high school football culture and the hyper-masculinity that surrounds it. Bottoms doesn't have too many acting notables outside of rising indie comedy icon Rachel Sennott, but ex-NFL superstar running back Marshawn Lynch delivers a breakthrough performance as the wild card teacher who supervises the afterschool club (he completely improvised all of his lines) and electropop idol Charli XCX helped to score the film. Though there's not much plot here that hasn't been seen before, the absurd carnage of the film's climax adds some uproariously over-the-top spectacle.
