Le Amiche (1955)

Cinematography by: Gianni Di Venanzo
Country: Italy
Genre: Drama/Romance

Plot:
Shaken by a failed suicide attempt within their friend group, five women reflect on their relationships with each other, their careers, and the men in their lives. Based on the 1949 novella Tra donne sole by Cesare Pavese.

Reasons to watch:
A precursor to Antonioni's alienation trilogy, Le Amiche is an expertly photographed, scripted, and staged melodrama that would earn the filmmaker a Silver Lion (Best Director) and a nomination for the Golden Lion (Best Film) at the Venice Film Festival. Its story is driven by female friendship in a way that wasn't often portrayed on screen during its era, exploring the societal maneuverings of its central group with nuance and insight, with much credit going to the woman who co-wrote the screenplay, the remarkable scriptwriter Suso Cecchi D'Amico. Exceptional on its merit, Le Amiche was a launching point for Antonioni's themes of spiritual ennui and social emptiness that would become integral to his later masterworks.
