Love on the Run (1979)
"Always running. Hasn't changed a bit!"
Directed by: François Truffaut
Cinematography by: Néstor Almendros
Country: France
Plot:
Fresh off his divorce after a series of separations, the ever-bumbling Antoine Doinel - now an author - tries to reignite a teenage flame while simultaneously attempting to win back his angry girlfriend.
Reasons to watch:
The final installment of Truffaut's five-film series "The Adventures of Antoine Doinel" - which began 20 years earlier with the exalted New Wave classic The 400 Blows - is a serviceable if underwhelming ending to Antoine's story in which nothing really changes, but the journey is entertaining. Love on the Run relies too heavily on clips from past films to tell its narrative; however, it also focuses more on the female characters, lending them a bit more agency and depth in this film than merely being adjacent to Antoine's life.
"The Adventures of Antoine Doinel" ranked:
1. Stolen Kisses (1968)
2. The 400 Blows (1959)
3. Bed and Board (1974)
4. Love on the Run (1979)
5. Antoine and Colette (1962) [featurette]
