Princess Mononoke (1997)
"You cannot alter your fate, my prince. However, you can rise to meet it, if you choose."
Directed by: Hayao Miyazaki
Cinematography by: Atsushi Okui
Country: Japan
Plot:
Infected with a curse from a boar dying of a gunshot wound, Prince Ashitaka attempts to mediate peace between a village hellbent on building an empire of iron, even if it means razing the landscape, and the creatures of the surrounding woods led by a princess and her wolf companions, who are willing to wipe out every last human to protect their home.
Reasons to watch:
It's real fuck-around-and-find-out hours in this unexpectedly bloody animated fantasy film from the perpetual environmentalist Hayo Miyazaki, who aggressively reminds us that while humans depend on nature, nature does not depend on humans. Nature could not give a flying fuck about our well-being - and continued disrespect of and harm towards the environment will result in the Earth's catastrophic wrath, like antibodies attacking an infection, which we will be powerless in the face of, other than whatever attempts are made to appease it. Aside from the thoroughly apocalyptic warning, Princess Mononoke also features stunning animation that captures the magic of nature and plenty of Miyazaki's charmingly imaginative creature design. I also discovered that an angry girl with wolf blood smeared across her mouth absolutely works for me. My attraction to vengeful, glowering witch (and witch-adjacent) women with a bone to pick with humanity stays undefeated.
