Signs (2002)
"Is it possible that there are no coincidences?"
Directed by: M. Night Shyamalan
Cinematography by: Tak Fujimoto
Country: United States
Plot:
Ex-preacher Graham Hess, reconciling with the recent death of his wife and a loss of faith, is faced with an even greater existential crisis when aliens who may or may not be coming in peace arrive on Earth.
Reasons to watch:
Signs is an outstanding Spielbergian family-friendly horror film - easily one of the best in that category. The story doesn't hold up under too much scrutiny, but Shyamalan directs the hell out of the film's dynamite third act, which is up there with Scream (1996) as one of my favorite third acts in contemporary horror. Mel Gibson has an incredibly scummy past, but he knocks it out of the park with his performance in the lead role, especially the gut-punch final dinner scene that ripples with tension until its inevitable emotional eruption that really sells the authenticity of the situation. My highest compliment for Signs might be that I didn't check my phone even once during its runtime, and that's some of the highest praise a movie can get these days. The strength of Hollywood blockbusters is not their flawless scripts but the level of immersion they provide and their likable characters, and Signs will suck you into its scenario like a tractor beam, refusing to return you to Earth until the credits roll.
