Dark Water (2002)
"Is it true that you once received psychiatric treatment?"
Directed by: Hideo Nakata
Cinematography by: Jun'ichirô Hayashi
Country: Japan
Plot:
A divorced mother working her way through a bitter custody battle fears that the new apartment she moved into with her young daughter hides ominous secrets.
Reasons to watch:
Between Ringu (1998) and Dark Water (2002), Hideo Nakata's impact on 21st-century horror can't be understated. He led the charge - along with contemporaries like Takashi Miike, Takashi Shimizu, and Kiyoshi Kurosawa - that would launch J-horror to worldwide acclaim and had Hollywood absolutely salivating to adapt their creations. In Dark Water, Nakata's soggy, rain-soaked atmosphere, heartfelt domestic drama, simple yet unsettling imagery, thoughtfully crafted filmmaking (that makes great use of space in communicating the characters' isolation and vulnerability by framing them alone in large, empty settings, as well as getting in tight to convey a sense of claustrophobia when it feels like the walls are closing in), and PG-13 accessibility demonstrate how he became such a potent influence on modern horror flicks, most notably the genre's immensely profitable ghost stories.
