IG Decade Challenge 1980-1989

Reflections of the Past, Visions of the Future

[2020]

Three decades down, three decades to go. The 80s were fittingly a transition period within the film world as commercial cinema boomed; the new wave directors largely began reining it in; and the new flock of independent filmmakers, while ripe with potential, were still a bit wet behind the ears. Films of the 80s were no less challenging than their predecessors in the previous two decades, but they were far less confrontational, as many of the stories seem to be personal rather than political. The anger and urgency of the past often replaced by observation and reflection.

1980-1989

Films watched: 15

Directed by: Alain Resnais; Krzysztof Zanussi; John Carpenter; Dario Argento; Robert Bresson; Vincent Ward; Robert Altman; Peter Greenaway; Paul Schrader; Andrei Tarkovsky; Spike Lee; Wim Wenders; Isao Takahata; David Cronenberg; Ermek Shinarbaev

Top 5 favorites:
1. The Sacrifice (1986)
2. Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985)
3. Revenge (1989)
4. Vigil (1984)
5. Tenebrae (1982)

Song used for the recap video is “Temple of the Golden Pavilion” from Philip Glass’s gorgeous soundtrack for Mishima. I can't upload the video to YouTube because of some pretty strict copyrighting.

[Editor's note: I did not finish this challenge because the murder of George Floyd occurred a few days into the 90s films and the challenge no longer held any priority.]
