For Emma, Forever Ago
Poetry 22
[2017]
The grass is always greener
'til I'm with her
Then I'm in the pasture
On the beach with her head on my chest
Heart beating to the rhythm of the waves
Hands intertwined, asking goofy questions
"If you were a leaf, what would your name be?
If you were a whale, what shape would be your tail?
Superpower 1, 2, 3
Invisibility
Jinx infinite"
You can cure it with a kiss
I'll dot your delicate wrist
and caress your slender neck 'til you purr
Oh her, oh her eyes seep into mine
Oh her, oh her soul encased in gold
Unfold it for me
Make me see that shining ocean
Eyes open to the wonders that await
But Brooklyn was an unsaid goodbye
Fuck if I didn't cry in that taxi
Fuck if that plane home didn't shatter me
like a two-ton sledgehammer on a glass pane
I still escape to that pasture
where the grass grows evergreen
And my heart still beats to the rhythm of the sea
Under the comforting weight of your head on my chest
on the beach
You were good to me
You were good for me
The memories I keep
