The first movie to ever make me cry real human tears.
Based on the actual transcript and record of the trial, this film is one of cinema’s greatest game-changers.
Dreyer’s technical mastery over the form shows in his daring, unconventional camerawork and the film’s completely innovative visual aesthetic.
Nothing like this had been put on the screen before, and no performance like
Renée Falconetti’s had been seen. In her role as the title character she took acting to new heights, modernizing the art form, and arguably, with the help of Dreyer’s unparalleled close-ups, she created film-acting; performances had previously been theatrical in nature with very pronounced movements and animated expressions.
Fun fact: this completely silent film - without even so much as a musical score - is the only movie to ever actually make me shed tears. Not to say my eyes have never welled-up at a movie, but this one had the faucets streaming.
