Gaslight (1944)
"The whole place seems to smell of death."
Directed by: George Cukor
Cinematography by: Joseph Ruttenberg
Country: United States
Plot:
Still traumatized by her aunt's violent murder, opera singer Paula Alquist and her new husband move back into the house where the deadly events took place, and before long, Paula becomes convinced that she's going insane. Based on the 1938 play, Gas Light, by Patrick Hamilton.
Reasons to watch:
Blending gothic psychodrama with shadow-laden noir, George Cukor's unnerving and lavish technical masterpiece earned seven Academy Award nominations - winning two (Best Art Direction; Best Actress for Ingrid Bergman). With a dense, spiraling atmosphere of paranoia and manipulation, this film and its source material were the basis for the now common term "gaslighting." A high-class, melodramatic thriller, Gaslight is effective enough to have even the audience second-guessing their perceptions.
Where to watch:
The Criterion Channel / Prime Video / Paramount+
