Plot:
Based on the story by Robert Louis Stevenson in which a brilliant and well-loved scientist splits the benevolent side of his humanity from his baser instincts, creating two distinct selves, inadvertently creating an uncontrollable monster.
Reasons to watch:
Notable for his musicals and romances, director Rouben Mamoulian's adaptation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is much more lavish than its predecessors, but his iteration of Mr. Hyde is no less cruel. The transformation scenes and makeup effects are superlative for the time of the film's release and paired with Mamoulian's innovative shooting techniques and Fredrich March's Oscar-winning performance in the title role, this is seen as the definitive adaptation of the source material.
