Horror Movie Hidden Gems Recap
I do the digging so you don't have to
[2020]
Spent this past Spooktober doing a fun horror movie challenge in my stories in hopes of finding some hidden gems (I did the digging so you don't have to!) I choose 25 random flicks under the criteria that it had to be a movie (1) I’ve never seen before, (2) knew next-to-nothing about, (3) never read a review for, and (4) didn’t check its score on Rotten Tomatoes. If that sounds like it would be a big messy grab bag: it was. Some of them didn’t even end up being genre films, and some were just straight-up bad - and as someone who will go out of their way to find things to appreciate about movies, I don’t say that lightly. But who cares about the bad ones!
Honorable Mention: The Masque of the Red Death (1964) [Certainly not the best thing ever made but damn it's fun. If this was a normal year with normal Halloween parties, the mesmerizingly psychedelic aesthetic in this bad boy would make it a great choice to throw on in the background.]
5. Cure (1997)
4. Born of Fire (1987)
3. Witchhammer (1970)
2. A Tale of Two Sisters (2003)
1. One Cut of the Dead (2017)
And now after 25 days of horror, I'm going to spend the next few weeks watching nothing but sitcoms, Classic Hollywood romantic comedies, meme compilations, and cute animal videos.
Recap video song credit: I don't know if it has a name but it's from the soundtrack of Lucio Fulci's The Psychic (1977), composed by Fabio Frizzi, Franco Bixio and Vince Tempera.
