February 2022 Favorite Watches & Lukeadamy Awards
That month I discovered Hype Williams could have been one of the most influential filmmakers of the 21st century
Top Ten Favorite Watches of the Month:

Wildly under-seen, this riveting neo-noir mystery is a revolving door of crazies where Don Cheadle shows up as the trigger-happy Mouse and out-crazies them all.
An emotionally draining neorealist domestic drama and an essential piece of work in 80s independent cinema.
Ice Cube really stole the show in this for me. His line deliveries are on point and impressively naturalistic.
Grim and graphic, this heart-wrenching, fatalistic tragedy from The Hughes Brothers is a sightless pit of retaliatory violence. Thankfully Jada Pinkett’s glowing beauty and charisma offers periodic sanctuary.
It feels like a stylistic homage to 60s action films with its vibrant technicolor palette, popcorn set pieces, and eccentric characters, kept fresh and compelling by Cleo’s afro-futuristic wardrobe and a potent focus on Black communal strength.
A bitingly fucked up and radically subversive “comedy” from legendary independent filmmaker Melvin Van Peebles that’s like being chowed down upon with the jagged teeth of a saw.
I’m genuinely upset that Belly is the only feature that Hype Williams ever made because his visual instincts blew me away in this borderline arthouse crime thriller that’s anchored by a dreamlike film grammar reminiscent of a Nicolas Winding Refn flick, but less rigid.
Incredible character work and striking cinematography stream from photojournalist Gordon Park’s thoroughly well-crafted crime thriller; a staple of the blaxploitation genre.
“Where some see despair, I see ground zero for the revolution.” A standout biopic bringing well-deserved attention to the legacy of the exceptional Fred Hampton.
And an even more remarkable documentary. The world was robbed of a brilliant mind when Hampton was executed by the cops in his own bed at the young age of 21. He deserves to be in textbooks for the right reasons.
