February 2021 Watch Recap

That month I was reminded George A. Romero is far more than just zombies

[2021]

Didn’t watch as much as I could have this month as I’ve been getting stuff ready for my move, and also I got caught up on season 4 of Better Call Saul and after I finished I was like “shit, I need to watch Breaking Bad again,” which I did. And that’s why I usually try not to binge entire series because it takes up weeks of my time. Anyways, lots of good watches this month, but nothing that REALLY blew me away. Got to see a charming short documentary from Barry Jenkins that gives background into his artistry. I was finally introduced to Cronenberg II, and Argentinian director Lucrecia Martel. I learned about cruising in a far more graphic way than I ever anticipated. I watched a film by Egyptian filmmaking legend Youssef Chahine (that wasn’t Cairo Station [1958]). I had my first taste of Vietnamese cinema with the gorgeously fluid The Scent of Green Papaya. I was reminded that George A. Romero did some pretty great things not involving zombies. And of course it’s always a treat to catch another Fassbinder flick.

Total Recs: 12

Top 5 Recs:
5. The Scent of Green Papaya (1993)
4. Outer Space (1999) [experimental short film]
3. Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (1974)
2. La ciénaga (2001)
1. Season of the Witch (1972)

Supercut song credit is “Tremendous Sea of Love” by Passion Pit, from what I think is their underrated fourth album.
