The Void (2016)

There's a lot to appreciate in this throwback horror flick filled with impressive practical effects.

A faceless, murderous cult surrounds a small, rural hospital, while corpses rise from the dead as twisted, formless abominations, and that’s only where the nightmare begins in this visceral Lovecraftian horror-thriller: The Void.

In a world full of CGI and visual effects, The Void brings its creatures and gore back into the world of the physical with outstanding prosthetic makeup and practical effects reminiscent of the best movies the genre had to offer during the amusingly excessive 1980s. What this film may lack in originality, it more than compensates for in entertainment value, driven largely by the sort of plucky attitude that comes with low-budget horror with something to prove. Between its grisly set-pieces, extensive conceptual design, action-heavy second half, and ever-mounting stakes - from the immediate to the cosmic - I personally believe that The Void would make a fantastic video game as well.
