Starlet (2012)

An unconventionally tender comedic drama about the friendship formed between an elderly woman and a young adult-film actress.

Directed by: Sean Baker
Cinematography by: Radium Cheung
Genre: Drama/Comedy

Sean Baker is one of the great humanist filmmakers of the 21st century. His stories often center around those on the margins of society and female friendship: a pair of 6-year-olds living at a budget hotel in The Florida Project (2017); two transgender sex workers in Tangerine (2015), a film notable for casting actual transgender women to play the roles, and for being shot entirely on an iPhone; and a young porn actress befriending an 85-year-old woman in this film, Starlet. His films are touching, vibrant and funny. You’re only doing yourself a favor by checking them out.
