Metropolis (1927)

A visionary epic that changed cinema forever.

Directed by: Fritz Lang
Country: Germany
Genre: Sci-Fi/Drama

Fritz Lang’s visionary masterpiece Metropolis changed cinema forever. This epic expressionist sci-fi film tells the story of an extremely affluent young man who falls in love with the leader of the city’s oppressed working class, and a vengeance-craving mad scientist who attempts to use them both to his own ends.

Metropolis is one of those films, similar to 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), that seems so mind-blowingly ahead of its time that it makes you wonder if the creators behind it were time travelers from the future just wanting to show off a bit.

Or they had aliens secretly telepathing ideas into their brains.

Or both. Like some type of time-traveling, alien-message-transmitting filmmakers. What a life that would be...

They were probably just a bunch of really talented artists though... which I guess makes it all the more impressive.
