Boogie Nights (1997)

Paul Thomas Anderson kicked down every down in Hollywood with this brilliant comedic drama about 1970's porn.

Writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson’s ambitious breakthrough hit about the porn industry (low-key one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen). PTA’s bold filmmaking style takes over in Boogie Nights as he directs with the patience and precision of a brain surgeon, knowing exactly when to get creative with his camera placement, and executing some tracking shots and long takes that are as playful as they are impressive, perfectly complementing the film’s mood of pomp and grandeur.

With his combination of filmic intuition, creative vision and technical command, by the time of the release of his iconic film There Will Be Blood in 2007, barely over 10 years into his career, PTA would already be widely recognized as a modern master of cinema.
